 Surgical Resident   Procedures Database

Description:  Surgical Residents in Ohio are required to perform a minimum number of surgical procedures of specific types in order to receive a medical license.  The purpose of this program was to enable computer-illiterate surgical residents to maintain a record of their procedures, and so determine what procedures they needed to perform in order to graduate from the Residency Program.  (This was the 1980s; nearly all of the surgical residents had never even touched a computer.)  This program saved the hospital the cost of computer-literate data-entry personnel.

Employed by:  Saint Luke's Hospital

Operating System:  DOS

Programming Languages:   Borland Paradox (PAL).

Hardware:  Any 80286 or higher IBM PC compatible computer with an HP LaserJet printer

Program Requirements:
  • Interface user-friendly enough for computer-illiterate users.
  • Maintain password-secured database of each resident's surgical procedures.
  • Automatically categorize and summarize each resident's procedures.
  • Print individual reports for each resident and summary reports of all residents for Residency Program Supervisor.
  • Update surgical procedures and classifications annually in accordance with Residency Program requirements.
